Where is it located?

Sophia's College for Women was founded in 1934. It is affiliated with the University of Mumbai and comes under the Governing Body of the Society for Higher Education for Women in India.

The staff of the college comprises of the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as well as other lay staff. The college has been bestowed with an A grade by the NAAC in both 2003 and 2009.

Studies and Activities :-

Sophia College offers several courses at the junior college, graduate degree college and postgraduate degree college level. At the degree college level, it offers three main courses B.A, B.Sc. and B.M.M (Bachelors in Mass Media). At the post graduate degree level, the college offers an M.Sc in life sciences with specialisation in neuroscience, microbiology and biochemistry. The college also offers a post¬graduate diploma in quality assurance in the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry and a postgraduate diploma in clinical analysis (DCI) apart from several UGC approved courses. Among the UGC approved courses are a certificate course in women's empowerment and a certificate course in cooking and baking. These courses fall under the Sophia Centre for Women's Studies and Development (SCWSD).

The Sophia campus hosts several activities for students around the year. The three main activities that take place are Peace Fortnight, Kaleidoscope and Ananya.

Kaleidoscope is an annual inter-collegiate youth festival with more than 10,000 Students from colleges all over Mumbai and outside participating in it. The festival is managed entirely by students, from start to finish.

Ananya is an academics related intercollegiate festival, where a theme is chosen in connection to the goals of the college. Workshops, seminars, debates etc are held, which students have the option to attend.

The college also has several clubs and associations such as The Sophia College English Dramatics Association (SCEDA), Western Music Club, Elocution and Debating Society, Sophia Sports Association etc.

Infrastructure :-

Sophia's College for women has a large, well-lit and airy library with a large collection of books, periodicals, encyclopedias, art books and maps. The library also has audio-visual material in the form of CDs, DVDs, film- strips, slides etc. Syllabi for all classes from the year 2000 have also been stored in the library. Teachers can avail of the overhead projector facility for teaching purposes. Internet facilities are available to both students and staff.
Sophia's college has a well-equipped computer centre with 65 computers and a tri-band Internet connection that is available at a nominal fee. The computer centre offers short-term courses in Windows, office automation, animation and design.

One of the unique features of the college is also its J. N. Heredia Center for value Education, Guidance and Counselling. Here, a fully trained counsellor provides consultancy services in the form of counselling, talks, workshops, aptitude tests etc.

Apart from these, the college has a well-managed hostel facility, a gymkhana that provides the latest equipment, instructors as well as a nutritionist. The college also has a canteen, a book store and a photocopying centre.

Facilities around the college :-
  • AP :- A little shack-like structure around 50 meters away from the main gate, Anda Pav (AP) serves items like bhurji, Maggie and of course - Anda Pav. Students often head over to this place during their breaks to snack and have conversations. 

  • Dosa :- There's a dosa - wala approximately 25 metres away from the gate.

  • KMD :- This is a general store that famous with students from the college who do not find space to sit inside AP.
The best thing about Sophia College for Women :-
  • History :- The land,on which the Sophia's college now stands, belonged  to the erstwhile East India Company in the late 1800s.

  • Star Gazing :- If you're a film buff, you'll be proud to see your college make celluloid history considering it's used for many movie shoots.

  • Canteen :- The college canteen is famous for its Chinese food and keeps adding to its menu every couple of months. The latest additions are South Indian, croissants and frankies.
